Gone – Hopefully Not for Long

For the past few years my father has made a claim about the best player on the Brown’s roster. No, it wasn’t whoever our backup QB was, or Joe Thomas, not even Josh Cribbs. Who is it? None other than Dave Zastudil.

Dave has been one of the the most consistent players on the team (along side Phil and Josh). To be fair, Dave, Phil, and Josh also got PLENTY of opportunities in games over the past few years. The reality is: we punt a lot, we kick a lot of field goals, and we return waaaaay to many kickoffs.

Midway through last season Zastudil hurt his planting foot’s knee and was put on the IR. He tried his best to come into camp healthy this year, but the knee was still an issue; the Browns were forced to put him on the IR for the season. He is in the final year of a 5 year contract, so it isn’t clear whether he will be back next year or not.

I don’t know what the hope for. On one hand I want our new punter, Reggie Hodges, to have a good year and do very well for us. However, him doing well would almost guarantee that Dave wouldn’t be back for the Browns in 2011. I guess the best possible situation for Dave and the Browns is that we simply don’t have to punt this year – ever. Honestly though, if we make it out of the first quarter of the first game without punting I will be surprised.

When is This Year?

Last week Emily, my parents, and I watched the first exhibition game against the Packers.  To be honest I wasn’t totally pumped for the season to kick off, or at least not as much as last year.  That being said, I still made sure we worked out dinner plans far in advanced so I didn’t find myself missing one minute of the game…I can only imagine what I would be capable of if I put so much thought and care into all aspects of my life.  These are the Browns though, they deserve it (no matter what you try to tell yourself).

I picked up the pizza and made it home just in time for the intro video from channel 3.  The four of us were sitting in front of the TV watching to video when we all said “Oh My God!  Where is the remote?”  We frantically looked around the room searching for the remote…Emily was horribly confused because she didn’t see what my parents and me did.  I just kept saying, “You will see…”  Searching for the remote seemed to be one of those moments in life that seemed to go on for hours, but in all reality was just a few moments.  Eventually we found the remote stuffed between two of the cushions of the sofa.  I restarted the show on the TV and we all watched again.  This time though, we paid special attention to what was on the screen.  Emily now saw what we saw…we were all in awe of what was before us on the screen.

I am sure everyone reading this has seen an intro video or two before the game – they are a collage of player shots and a couple fans mixed together to a high pace, country style music – the kind of stuff that gets you pumped up before a game.  Last week was no different except for one thing…we were on the screen!  The video was centered on Emily and I holding up our “THIS YEAR” sign that we brought to every game last year.  We were only on the screen for a moment, but it made our day.

Sadly, that was the high point of the game for us (before it started).  The Browns looked like more of last year’s team than a newly formed team under Mangini.  The team is much like our economy right now – you can’t fix it overnight, there is no “one solution” and things will just take time to turn around.

That being said, when will THIS YEAR be?  I don’t know, none of us do.  All I can control while we wait is how I feel about the team and what actions I will take while waiting.  I can tell you this though – the THIS YEAR sign will be at every game until THIS YEAR is over and we can all celebrate for years to come.

Madden Prediction for this week:

This year I have decided to play the Browns game of the week on Madden before it happens and see what the outcome is.  This week, the Browns were winning 17-0 going into the fourth quarter, but some late interceptions and poor defense resulted in 21 points for the Lions.  The Lions went ahead with a couple minutes to play and managed to hold the lead.

We Are a Family

I got a call last Tuesday from one of my lab mates, Matt. His girlfriend, Danielle, was in town and he wanted to get together with Emily & me. I told him we were planning on going to training camp Wednesday night (see last post) and to the Family Night at the stadium on Friday. After a quick conference with Danielle, they jumped on Friday night.

After my experience on Wednesday I was not overly excited on Friday, aside from any man’s desire to eat $1.00 hot dogs of course. Meeting up before driving down went like normal – I was ready early, our guests were on time, and Emily was nowhere to be seen – I guess those med schools really do keep you busy. Hopefully her tardiness does not become a trend and it is all part of the preseason shake down. I don’t know how well I could handle being late on game day – she might just find a note and a ticket on her counter.

Emily eventually was able to sneak away. We all hopped in the car and made our way down to the stadium. It has been too long since I parked in the Muni lot – as I got out of the car I was consumed with questions. Where were all the modded out Browns cars and buses? Did we have the wrong day? What is going on? Where was everyone?

The four of us started walking towards the stadium – the closer we got, the louder things became. As we walked past the science center I noticed something parked in the street in front of the stadium – a modded Browns school bus. Thank the Lord! Next to it was a line of orange and brown cars – all parked next to the stadium for people to admire. I must say, my personal favorite was the ambulance with a dead Steeler’s player in the back (fake…of course).

We made our way inside and quickly bought more hot dogs than we probably should have from a walking vendor. Unfortunately, we had to wait in line for 20 minutes to get drinks, but that is a story for another time. We managed to get seats on the 30 yard line, home side, in the lower bowl – something that is near impossible even during the preseason.

We watched as the Browns warmed up and a commentator filled everyone in on the new players, the injuries, and old stories. It was a great time. The players eventually actually scrimmaged – the actual plays were not important though…I will not get into that other than to say it was funny to watch professional players play touch football. What was important was that the players and about 26,000 fans came together on a Friday night to see one another. It was like a family reunion, with, you know, the family you actually want to see. Everyone was laughing, everyone was having a great time. Emily & I were joking with a fellow fan about how all the girls love Brady Quinn, we were shouting as players made a big play.

As the practice slowly came to a close I became sad – the night was going to be over. The players were leaving the field without so much as a wave to the fans & I heard no goodbye from the commentator who had spent the entire night with us. As I looked over at the big screen I saw something that cheered me up immediately – “Stick around for the fireworks!” At that same moment I saw Josh Cribbs come out of the locker room with some other players to sign autographs. I felt a tremendous wave of happiness come over me. I let it soak in.

The fireworks were amazing, synced to music and everything. After the show we were all filing out barking, shouting, and having a good time. Kids were running around in the grass holding footballs just about as big as their entire body, parents were all smiles.

It is easy to lose track of people, even good friends, over the course of a year. But – we are a family; this was our reunion. We were welcoming each other back to town – the fans, the stadium, the players. I love this family…not only because we all share a common interest, not only because we stand up for one another, but also because this family is unique. Unlike your blood family, anyone can join this family – All you need is a desire to be part of it.
